By Tommy Goudge (July 9, 2009) – As Ohsweken Speedway’s Canadian Sprint Car Nationals event continues to expand, so too does the list of sponsors and awards presented each year. This year Inside Track Motorsport News and Ohsweken Speedway are pleased to announce the creation of a new award recognizing the accomplishments of Canadian drivers in the event.
“The Canadian Sprint Car Nationals continues to grow in stature each year, and it's an honour for Inside Track to support this event with the ‘Inside Track Motorsport News Top Canadian Finisher Award’” said David Weber, Inside Track’s Managing Editor.
A $500 prize is on the line, to be awarded to the top Canadian finisher in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals feature event. The top Canadian finisher in last year’s edition of the Nationals was Quebec driver Steve Poirier, who came home seventh. Poirier is the only Canadian who has won the event, as he visited victory lane consecutively in 2006 and 2007.
From local grassroots racing to Canadian touring series and the Canucks who compete on the international stage, Inside Track Motorsport News is the leader in terms of timely, in-depth and thought-provoking coverage of the motorsports that matter to Canadians. Stock cars, road racing, drag racing, karting, rallying, motorcycles and several other racing disciplines appear in every issue. For more information, please visit www.InsideTrackNews.com

WISECO PISTONS MID-SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS AT OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY FRIDAY NIGHT
by Tommy Goudge (July 7, 2009) – Hard as it is to believe, this week marks the halfway point in the 2009 racing season at Ohsweken Speedway as Wiseco Pistons presents the Mid-Season Championship edition of Friday Night Thunder on July 10. The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, and Bombers will all be in action, plus Vintage Cars, while Evers Financial is proud to present the Mini Stock portion of the program. Eight exciting and fast paced nights have been completed at the three-eighths mile clay oval, and the championship battles are starting to take shape.
In the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division, Tom Huppunen has led the points all season, but has seen his lead dwindle to just twenty-three markers over Glenn Styres over the past two weeks. Huppunen, however, has shown no signs of slowing down and claimed the $3,000 Northern Summer Nationals feature win last Friday night, while Styres finished third. Ryan Hunsinger sits third in the standings heading into Friday’s event, while Kevin Job and Dave Dykstra are tied for fourth. The Rookie of the Year award chase for the Corr/Pak Sprints is starting to heat up, as Kevin Loveys leads Jim Huppunen by just ten points, while Travis Cunningham is also in the fight, just another eight points behind Huppunen. Cunningham was the highest finishing rookie in last Friday’s Northern Summer Nationals feature, as he took home a fine tenth place finish.
The points chase in the ESSO Thunder Stock division is now the tightest battle of any regular division at the Speedway, as Billy Bleich, Jr. has closed in on season-long leader Shayne Pierce, and now sits just five markers back. Bleich finished third in last week’s event, while Pierce finished eighth. Jeremy Bean and Lee Winger continued their consistent seasons on Friday, finishing seventh and sixth respectively. Bean is currently ranked third in the points chase, followed by Winger, and Brad Herron. Last week, Rob Disher scored a popular victory and became the fifth different winner in the Thunder Stocks division this season.
Mitchell Brown continued his dominance of the ESSO Mini Stock division last week by claiming his sixth win of the season, but it was not easy as he just barely edged out ’08 track champion Abel Castelein for the win. It is the consistent Kevin Hilborn who sits second in the standings however, followed by Mike Evers, Dave Goodacre, and Rick Emberson. Last week saw the return of some drivers who had been away for awhile, including Rob Hoskins who finished a strong third, while Wyatt Van Wart returned with a new car and looked fast until a flat tire proved to be his undoing.
In the Bomber division, Karl Sault claimed the win last Friday, his first since opening night. Sault leads the points standings, followed by Kacey Huffman, Jesse McDonald, the four driver team of #113, and Dale Cooke.

Gray Takes His Second Checkered at Flamboro Speedway
From www.CanAmMidgets.com: The Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets were more than pleased to welcome twenty-five drivers to Flamboro Speedway this past Saturday. With a track full of anxious drivers, the green flag dropped and the excitement began as J.R Fitzpatrick began pulling away from the pack at a blistering pace, setting some of the fastest lap times of the night.
Half-way through the race, Fitzpatrick began to fade, while James Gray and Daniel Bois charged forward from mid-pack to over-take Fitzpatrick. Gray and Bois began racing for the lead as Rob Neely continued to charge through the field. The red flag came out as Larry Westwood got into the wall, igniting his car in flames. Thankfully, he was able to walk away from the wreck, proving once again the high level of safety the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midget cars possess.
With a late caution taking several cars out of the race, the final green flag dropped with only three laps to go. Gray and Bois took off from the pack, and to Bois's dismay, he got a flat tire on the last lap. Gray took the checkered, while Neely and Chris Holman got past Bois to finish on the podium. Bois managed to hold onto fourth, and David Balych rounded out the top five.

HUPPUNEN HAULS IN $3000 NORTHERN SUMMER NATIONALS VICTORY AT OHSWEKEN; DISHER, BROWN, AND SAULT ALSO WIN FEATURES
by Tommy Goudge (July 3, 2009) – Tom Huppunen continued to hold a hot hand at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night, claiming the $3000 winner’s share of the second annual Northern Summer Nationals for sprint cars presented by Corr/Pak Merchandising. In Thunder Stock action, Rob Disher scored a popular victory, while Mitchell Brown nosed out Abel Castelein for the Mini Stock win, and Karl Sault claimed Bomber feature win honours. The races were completed despite a rain delay of over an hour after the heat races were completed, but the wait was worth it for both fans and drivers as a great night of racing ensued.
The twenty-five lap Northern Summer Nationals feature began with Ryan Grubaugh and Bobby Breen on the front row, and it was Breen jumping out to the early lead. Before a lap could be completed, Bubba Broderick flipped in turn two to bring out the red flag. Broderick emerged uninjured and in fact came close to making repairs and getting back in the race, but was a few moments too late.
With the green flag back out, the action quickly heated up, and the driver on the move early on was Dustin Daggett. After receiving the eighth starting position in the “outlaw style” redraw in which drivers chose each other’s starting spots, Daggett wasted no time getting to the front and was in second behind Breen by the time the third lap was completed.
Huppunen, meanwhile, had been given the seventh starting spot, and worked his way through the field at a more methodical pace, taking over the fourth spot by the time another red flag waved, this time for a hard crash between Derek Jonathon and Brad Malloy in turn two. Both drivers climbed from their damaged machines, but were done for the night.
Back under green again, Bryan Howland began to make his presence known, and got by Daggett for the runner-up spot on lap nine. Howland then went to work on race-long leader Breen, passing him on the twelfth lap and setting sail out front, while Breen, Daggett, and Huppunen jockeyed for position behind him. On lap eighteen, Breen spun in turn two, but somehow managed to keep his car under power and stayed in the top ten.
As the race began to wind down, Huppunen was finally able to get clear of Daggett, but looked to be too far behind Howland to do anything in the remaining handful of laps. Misfortune struck for Howland during lap twenty-two, however, as his front wing mounts came loose, allowing the wing to flip up and obscure his vision. Howland was forced to pull to the infield, while Huppunen inherited the lead and held on for the victory. Daggett followed in second, while Glenn Styres, Dain Naida, and Jared Zimbardi completed the top five. Heat race wins for the thirty-seven Sprint Cars in action were claimed by Kevin Job, Bobby Breen, Styres, and Jared Zimbardi, while Dave Dykstra, Howland, Daggett, and Grubaugh claimed qualifying race victories, and James Evans was the Consi winner.

Miller Edges Moran In "Classic" Finish
Greg Cybulski, SWIFT CURRENT, SK (July 4, 2009) Kelly Miller of Stirling, Alberta celebrated his first ASCS CanWest victory in fine fashion as he edged out Sean Moran to win the 2009 ASCS CanWest Prairie Dirt Classic at Speedy Creek Raceway in Swift Current, Saskatchwan on Saturday night. A good crowd was on hand to witness an intense battle for the lead in the closing laps of the 25 lap feature. Starting on the poll position, the #44 of Miller enjoyed an early race lead while Moran's #6M Sprint Car quickly jumped from his 5th place starting position to 2nd on the first lap.
Trouble followed as the #15 of Gord "The Bulldog" Kynoch and the #12 of Casey Adams tangled in turn 2, resulting in an early exist for both competitors.
On the restart, Miller got the jump, but the chase was on as Moran was in the hunt for his 2nd straight Classic win. On lap 7, a yellow flag came out as the #39c of Dennis MacEachern slowed to an gradual stop on the front stretch and his evening was done.
When action resumed, an intense battle for 2nd ensued between Jesse Dakus and Sean Moran, with Dakus taking the spot. That, however, was short-lived as Moran would eventually pass Dakus and set his sights on Kelly Miller.
Another yellow flag, late in the race, would set up the showdown between Miller and Moran. The 6M blanketed the leader in the closing laps, but could not make the pass as Kelly Miller would take the checkered flag. Jesse Dakus would finish the feature in 3rd place, while Jessica Lavallee turned in a solid performance with a 4th place finish.
Rounding up the top 5 was Kelly Miller, Sean Moran, Jesse Dakus, Jessica Lavallee and Rick Tessemaker.
In a special feature, Fountain Tire sponsored a $500 Dash for Cash shootout which was won by Sean Moran.

Wade Wows Them In Winnipeg
Greg Cybulski, WINNIPEG, MB (July 3, 2009) North Dakota racer Wade Nygaard made history at Winnipeg, Manitoba's Red River Co-op Speedway by winning the first American Sprint Car Series feature race at the 4/10ths mile dirt track oval. In what can only be described as the wildest and most awkward finish ever witnessed, the 9N of Nygaard went high on the final turn to edge out the 4J of Lee Grosz, who's sprint car bobbled in the turn and finished in second place, sliding backwards over the finish line. Fortunately for Grosz, no damage came to car or driver. On this night, the hard luck award had to go out to Leduc, Alberta's Casey Adams. His #12 sprint car flipped violently into a catch fence on the backstretch during hot laps. Crews and team mates worked feverishly to get the car back together in time for Adam's heat race only to see the same fate befall the #12. Fortunately, the driver was not seriously injured in either incident. At the start of the feature race, the hardcharger of the night was Grand Forks, North Dakota champion Mark Dobmeier, who drove the Layton-owned K9. Dobmeier started in 9th position and quickly moved up to 5th before his night ended as the K9 slowed down to a stop on lap 6 of the 30 lap feature.
Another large crowd of Sprint Car fans were on hand to witness an exciting night of open wheel racing at Red River Co-op Speedway. When the night's racing was done, the pits were loaded with many eager fans, young and old alike, visiting with the drivers and getting autographs.
