by Tommy Goudge (July 7, 2009) – Hard as it is to believe, this week marks the halfway point in the 2009 racing season at Ohsweken Speedway as Wiseco Pistons presents the Mid-Season Championship edition of Friday Night Thunder on July 10. The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, and Bombers will all be in action, plus Vintage Cars, while Evers Financial is proud to present the Mini Stock portion of the program. Eight exciting and fast paced nights have been completed at the three-eighths mile clay oval, and the championship battles are starting to take shape.
In the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division, Tom Huppunen has led the points all season, but has seen his lead dwindle to just twenty-three markers over Glenn Styres over the past two weeks. Huppunen, however, has shown no signs of slowing down and claimed the $3,000 Northern Summer Nationals feature win last Friday night, while Styres finished third. Ryan Hunsinger sits third in the standings heading into Friday’s event, while Kevin Job and Dave Dykstra are tied for fourth. The Rookie of the Year award chase for the Corr/Pak Sprints is starting to heat up, as Kevin Loveys leads Jim Huppunen by just ten points, while Travis Cunningham is also in the fight, just another eight points behind Huppunen. Cunningham was the highest finishing rookie in last Friday’s Northern Summer Nationals feature, as he took home a fine tenth place finish.
The points chase in the ESSO Thunder Stock division is now the tightest battle of any regular division at the Speedway, as Billy Bleich, Jr. has closed in on season-long leader Shayne Pierce, and now sits just five markers back. Bleich finished third in last week’s event, while Pierce finished eighth. Jeremy Bean and Lee Winger continued their consistent seasons on Friday, finishing seventh and sixth respectively. Bean is currently ranked third in the points chase, followed by Winger, and Brad Herron. Last week, Rob Disher scored a popular victory and became the fifth different winner in the Thunder Stocks division this season.
Mitchell Brown continued his dominance of the ESSO Mini Stock division last week by claiming his sixth win of the season, but it was not easy as he just barely edged out ’08 track champion Abel Castelein for the win. It is the consistent Kevin Hilborn who sits second in the standings however, followed by Mike Evers, Dave Goodacre, and Rick Emberson. Last week saw the return of some drivers who had been away for awhile, including Rob Hoskins who finished a strong third, while Wyatt Van Wart returned with a new car and looked fast until a flat tire proved to be his undoing.
In the Bomber division, Karl Sault claimed the win last Friday, his first since opening night. Sault leads the points standings, followed by Kacey Huffman, Jesse McDonald, the four driver team of #113, and Dale Cooke.
